There are some treats you should never give a dog, no matter how cutely he asks.
These are:
- Avocado
Avocado contains persin which although harmless to humans is highly toxic for most animals. If you feed it to your dog, it might start vomiting and have diarrhea.
- Alcohol
Pets should never be given alcohol. It can damage the liver and the brain. Just a little can cause vomiting, diarrhea, central nervous system depression, problems with coordination, coma and even death.
- Onions
Onions in any form – powdered, cooked or raw – can destroy a dog’s red blood cells and lead to anemia. A little bit of onion in food, once in a while, will probably not cause any harm but do not put it into their food regularly.
- Tea and Coffee
Dogs love a taste of tea and coffee but both can be fatal for a dog. Your dog can be poisoned by caffeine .Symptoms include restlessness, rapid breathing, muscle tremors, bleeding and fits.
- Grapes and Raisins
Some dogs love grapes and raisins. Scientists are not exactly sure why, but grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs. Signs include repeated vomiting and hyperactivity.
- Milk and Ice Cream
Dogs love milk and ice-cream and it is difficult to resist and say no to them especially on a hot day. However milk can cause various digestive problems and itchiness. A taste of ice cream once in a while will probably not cause trouble though
- Gum and Candy
Most gum and candy are sweetened with Xylitol. This can cause a rapid increase in the insulin and the dog’s blood sugar can drop suddenly leading to liver failure.
- Chocolate
Most people now know that chocolate is bad for dogs. This is because chocolate has an agent called theobromine in it. The most dangerous types of chocolates are unsweetened baking chocolate and the dark chocolate. Eating this can cause a dog to have diarrhea, be excessively thirsty and vomit. It does not affect every dog – but why take the chance?
- Bones
Be very careful when giving a dog bones. Make sure that they are not small, sharp and liable to splinter. Definitely do not give bones from poultry. Bones that can splinter can cause an obstruction in your dog’s digestive system.
- Fruits with Seeds
Avoid giving any type of fruits with stones or seeds to your dog, unless you remove the stones or seeds first, so that they cannot cause an obstruction in your dog’s gut.
- Raw Eggs
The reason behind this is the same as to humans. Your dog can get food poisoned. Salmonella or E. coli are the most common two. Eggs are also known to cause skin problems in dogs. Hard boiled eggs are OK.
- Salt
Be careful when cooking food for the dog and do not use much salt. When dogs eat too much salt they get excessively thirsty and need to urinate more often. This can lead to sodium ion poisoning. Symptoms include depression, tremors, seizures and death.
